Kishwaukee Community Hospital’s Neuroscience and Sleep Disorder Center has received accreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), making it the only accredited sleep lab program in the area.

According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), this accreditation is “the gold standard by which the medical community and the public can evaluate sleep medicine services.” The standards for accreditation tells consumers that sleep medicine providers display and maintain proficiency in areas such as testing procedures and policies, patient safety and follow-up, and physician and staff training.

“In addition to sleep studies, the center ensures patient compliance with home treatment by providing a sleep disorders support group referred to as A.W.A.K.E (Alert, Well, And Keeping Energetic),” said Joey Schap, director of Respiratory Care, Sleep, EEG, Pulmonary Function Testing and Cardiopulmonary Rehab at Kish Hospital. “This support group is offered once per quarter and is open to the public free of charge,” Schap added. “Many people affected by a sleep disorder use this group to meet with others affected by the same disorder and find it useful for ideas about home treatment.”

To receive a five-year accreditation, a sleep center must meet or exceed all standards for professional healthcare as designated by the AASM. The accreditation process involves detailed inspection of a center’s facility and staff, including an evaluation of testing procedures, patient contacts, and physician training. Additionally, the facility’s goals must be clearly stated and include plans for positively affecting the quality of medical care in the community it serves.

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine is a professional medical society for clinicians, researchers, and other health care providers in the field of sleep medicine. As the national accrediting body for sleep disorders centers and labs, the AASM is dedicated to setting standards and promoting excellence in sleep medicine health care, education and research. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine currently accredits more than 2,200 sleep medicine centers and laboratories across the country.

To schedule an appointment to see a sleep specialist at Kish Hospital’s Neuroscience and Sleep Disorder Center, call 815.277.3979. For more information, visit www.kishhospital.org/sleep.

Michael Larson has been named chair of the KishHealth System Board of Directors succeeding Michael Cullen, who served as chair for four years.  Cullen, president and CEO of The National Bank & Trust Co., Sycamore, will continue to serve on the board.

Larson of DeKalb, former owner of Elmer Larson Inc., has served on the health system board of directors for eight years. He is active with the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce and previously was vice president of ReNew DeKalb. He also served on the boards of the Kishwaukee Family YMCA and the DeKalb County Community Foundation.

The health system board also recently recognized two longtime members, Mike Mooney and Anita Zurbrugg, who retired from the board after fulfilling their maximum allowable terms. It also welcomed three new members, Thomas Choice, Dr. Photine Liakos, and Leonetta Rizzi.

Mooney of DeKalb ended 18 years of involvement with the health system, which began with his appointment to the Kishwaukee Health System Council in 1993. In 2001, he was appointed to the Kishwaukee Community Hospital Board of Directors, which transitioned to the KishHealth System Board of Directors in 2002. He continued to serve on the health system board until 2011, and was board chair from 2004 to 2007.

“Mike’s contributions to our community’s healthcare delivery system cannot be measured just in years,” said Kevin Poorten, health system president and CEO.  “He provided leadership and vision during a time of reorganization and planning that led to a new hospital in DeKalb, expansion of services, quality improvements in patient care, and strategic initiatives that will take the health system into a new era of reform and technological advances.

“We applaud Mike’s continuing and dedicated community involvements and wish him the best as he transitions with the new ownership of the DeKalb/Sycamore GM dealership,” Poorten said.

Zurbrugg of DeKalb was appointed to the Kish Hospital board in 2001, and like Mooney, transitioned to the health system board in 2002, serving until 2011. She also was on the board of Health Progress Inc., the health system’s for-profit arm, and was its chair from 2004 to 2008.

“As a health system board member, Anita was passionate about improving the healthcare delivery system for our community. We’re thrilled that she will continue to serve the human needs of our community in her new role as program director for the DeKalb County Community Foundation,” Poorten said.

The newest board members, Choice, Liakos, and Rizzi, began their terms in December 2011.

Choice, president of Kishwaukee College and past chair of the Ben Gordon Center Board, also served on the Health Progress Board.

Dr. Liakos, a DeKalb native and orthopedic surgeon with Midwest Orthopaedic Institute in Sycamore, previously served on the DeKalb County Board of Health and the Family Service Agency Foundation Board.

Rizzi of Genoa is manager of Coordinated Care Solutions for Walgreens Health System Solutions, Deerfield. Before joining Walgreens she worked in the hospital and community side of healthcare for 26 years.

“Our new board members provide diversity in expertise that will be invaluable as we address the challenges of healthcare reform and meeting the needs of our patients and community,” Poorten said.

Other members of the health system board of directors are Terry Duffy, Serena; Dr. Umesh Goswami, DeKalb; Tom Matya, DeKalb; Mary Lynn McArtor,  Malta; John Moulton, Sycamore; Dr. Jagdish Patel, DeKalb; Promod Vohra, DeKalb; Brad Waller, Sycamore; and Dr. Ann West, Sandwich.

Cutline for photo:  Anne Meyer of Sycamore and her son, Bill of St. Charles, delivered 80 fleece blankets to The Cancer Center at Kishwaukee Community Hospital, DeKalb, on  Valentine’s Day in memory of husband and father, William Meyer.  Cancer Center staff warmly accept the gift for their patients.

Chemotherapy and radiation therapy patients at The Cancer Center at Kishwaukee Community Hospital, DeKalb, are the beneficiaries of a heartwarming gift in memory of William C. Meyer, a Sycamore man who died of lung cancer last April.

Eighty handmade fleece blankets were delivered to The Cancer Center on Valentine’s Day by Meyer’s wife, Anne, his son, Bill; and long time family friend, Diana Tennant.

Tennant, a family consumer science teacher at Haines Middle School, St. Charles, challenged her students to make 100 fleece blankets in a project to honor the memory of the man who was like a father to her.

The project soon became known as “Wrapped in Love,” as word spread that the class was looking for donations of fleece material and money to complete the challenge.

Students sent out emails and circulated flyers. Others students, faculty, sports teams, and friends from as far away as Virginia and Texas got involved. Enough material was donated and purchased to make double thick blankets. Students cut strips and tied the layers together. The finished blankets were then rolled and tied with bright ribbon with a picture or note from the designer attached.

“We are little shy of the 100 blankets, but will continue the project throughout the year to reach 100,” Tennant said.  And she’d be very pleased if the idea went viral, inspiring others throughout the country to make fleece blankets for cancer patients in their communities.

As Anne well knows, cancer patients get chilled during their many hours of treatment. The soft blankets made with two layers of fleece come in bright colors and whimsical patterns and are sure to  warm patients’ bodies and hearts. The project, she said, was a lesson in “paying it forward.”

Heather Larsen and Lisa Kiepert have been honored by Kishwaukee Community Hospital’s Laboratory as the 2012 employees of the year. The award recipients are nominated by their peers and then selected by a review committee of the laboratory’s director and supervisors. Nominations are required to include a paragraph with specific examples of the employees’ good behaviors and values exhibited on the job. Winners are chosen based on the number of nominations and the reasons given. This is the third year of the annual awards.

Heather Larsen has been chosen as Kish Hospital’s Phlebotomist of the Year. A nominator said, “Heather makes the change of shift pleasant because she comes in ready to work. Heather has one of the best personalities in the lab. She is bright, friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable, and above all, puts the patients first. I always feel confident that if Heather was involved with something it was done correctly. She is a great example of positivity.”

Heather worked for Kish Hospital, starting in 2001, as a phlebotomist for five and a half years, returning last year in January. Heather said, “I have really enjoyed working at Kish Hospital and am honored my co-workers picked me for Phlebotomist of the Year. Thank you all very much!”

Lisa Kiepert has been selected as Kish Hospital’s Lab Tech of the Year. A nominator said, “Lisa is the first person to jump on board and try to make improvements in the lab. She is a great mentor and very knowledgeable. Lisa is very dedicated to this lab and deserves to be recognized for her hard work. Lisa is a great leader and micro section head. She is always willing to help anyone who needs it. She never seems too busy to ask a question or to help resolve an issue.”

Lisa has been a lab tech for 20 years, 16 at Kish Hospital. Lisa said, “I have witnessed the huge growth that this facility has and is experiencing and it is exciting. I admire the commitment that this institution, the doctors, and staff are making to the community. I am blessed to be surrounded by a group of techs, phlebotomists, processors, and secretarial staff who exhibit the values of Kish Hospital. Everyone is deserving of recognition for all the hard work.”

Dorrie Kasmar, administrative director of Kish Hospital’s Lab, said, “This is such an important award for us because the winners are primarily selected by their peers.  It is rewarding to read the nominations and hear all the good things that the staff members are doing for patients and each other.” She added, “Their nominations reflect the high values they hold for the work that they do. The winners have their pictures posted in the department and they receive an award certificate and a gift certificate.”
